Common questions
We get asked a lot of questions. Here are some of the best ones, along with our answers.
What’s the science behind this stuff?
The ‘science’ of this stuff comes from theory and research on human performance – particularly from psychology and human physiology. We’ve drawn especially from arenas where people have to perform at high levels, under pressure and in tough conditions – elite sport, military situations and pressurised business environments. We’ve taken our practical experience of working to support people in elite sport and business and our understanding of ‘what works’ and distilled it into what you see on The Performance Room. If you want to know more, then just ask us, we’d love to bore you with the detail!
There’s loads on here, where should I start?
Depends what you like and what you’re after! If you’re just curious about what it’s all about, then we’d suggest starting with the basics on performance. Start with The heart of performance and What makes the elite so good kitbags. If you know what you’re looking for, there will be a training plan or kitbag for you – just use the search function or browse the titles. If you love a bit of structure and fancy the idea of having your own virtual coach, dive right in to a 12 week training plan or work through the Athlete at Work programme. If you’re still stuck, just ask us – we’d love to recommend stuff for you.
How much time should I spend on here each week?
How long is a piece of string?! We’d suggest a combination of spending a bit of time, little and often in The Performance Room, as well as diving in when you need something specific to help you. Some people like to schedule time in their diary to do it. Others like to surf as and when it takes their fancy, or have a daily habit of logging in on the commute to work. Choose what works for you.
What’s the capital of Iceland?
We can’t believe you asked us such an easy question.
What Olympic gold medalists have you worked with?
We could tell you, but we’d have to kill you. Let’s just say that between us we’ve been to 12 Olympic and Paralympic Games and worked with (we reckon) over 100 medalists.
I’ve got some suggestions for improving this site – would you like them?
We’d love them. They’re essential for helping us make the site better for you. Please use the feedback form to share them with us. And we’ll be emailing you every now and again to ask for your feedback too. We’ve also got a small group of “superusers” who we meet with every now and then to plan what’s next for The Performance Room. If you’d like to be a superuser, then we’d love to have you join us and will even buy you coffee and cake at our meetings.
If everyone in the world jumped up and down at the same time, would it cause an earthquake?
We haven’t got a clue. We’re human performance experts, not geophysicists.
